Crown Thinning
This retains the tree’s overall size and shape, but allows more light to filter through the canopy and penetrate into surrounding areas, gardens and houses while also reducing the tree’s wind resistance. Reasons for crown thinning:
-
To reduce wind resistance of the tree therefore lowering the risk of branch failure and the tree being windblown
-
To allow better airflow through the tree
-
To allow light to filter through to the inner canopy of the tree and down onto the surrounding ground
-
To remove competing branches
-
To remove crossed and rubbing branches, minimising the risk of disease and failure
-
Allows light through to interior branches, improving growth
