Crown Reduction
The object of crown reductions is to reduce the overall size of a tree’s canopy by anything from 10% to 40% depending on species and growing conditions. There are a number of reasons for having a tree’s crown reduced, most commonly:
-
To allow more light into a garden or house
-
To bring an overgrown tree back into balance with its surrounding environment
-
To reinvigorate a tree showing signs of disease by removing dead and dying branches back to suitable live growing points
-
To reshape unbalanced trees
-
To reduce root size

There are two main ways to reduce a tree’s crown, when a crown reduction of 10 to 20% is the most suitable option it is often possible to cut to appropriate growth points within the canopy. The idea being that the tree continues its growth through these new “leader” branches. When a crown reduction of more than 20% is required it is not always possible to cut to suitable growth points. In this instance TreeSmiths Ltd will aim to get a good and even shape on the finished reduction, to promote new and even regrowth.
